ALS Stories from the Harpoon 5-Miler
In 2009, for the first time, we made online fundraising available to runners. A few special runners took on the challenge, in particular, Treva Southworth who raised over $1900 in honor of her friend and ALS victim, Deb Garand. The next year, she came back with Team Derb ALS and their team of six raised $6,100! We got to know Treva and her story (which struck a chord with us then and continues to now), and featured her team on our website in 2011 so all of our runners could be inspired by their passion.
From there, we started to see more runners go the extra mile and fundraise for the Angel Fund, and began to get to know the people behind the fundraising numbers. With every ALS story we heard, we were touched and wanted to share them. We created this section to honor the victims of ALS, and the families who celebrate their lives with us each year at the Harpoon 5-Miler.
We hope you'll enjoy reading their stories as much as we have, and are inspired to help us Fight ALS.
As for Team Derb, they are still going strong, as you'll see below, raising $26,125 in 2014!
Thank you to everyone who has shared their stories with us. We look forward to seeing you on race day!
