VIRTUAL RACE DAY FAQS
What is a virtual run?
Our version of a virtual run is an event that can be completed from any location you choose. You can run, jog, handcycle, pushrim, walk, etc. You can do this on the sidewalk, on a track, on a treadmill or on a trail, as long as you observe recommended COVID-19 safety precautions in your state. A virtual race provides the flexibility to complete your miles your way, at your own pace, and time it yourself.
Where should I run? What’s the course?
There is no set course this year. Make your own and have fun with it! We want you to run with only those you have been self-isolating with in order to keep everyone healthy. Please be sure to follow the CDC guidelines, wear a mask, and keep six feet away from anyone that you run past to keep yourself and others as safe as possible.
Will this race be timed?
No, not officially. You can complete the 5 miles at your own pace, and time yourself. You will be able to upload your times, but we are not tracking times for awards. Since everyone will run/walk on a different route, with varying elevation and terrain, we are not giving out awards based on fastest times.
How do I post my results to prove that I completed the race?
Go to the results tab at the top of the race page or click this link (you will also receive an email with this information on race morning!). Results reporting is based on an honor system this year. We would love for you to post your time so we can give you a virtual high-five, but since everyone will be running on different courses, we will not be giving out awards for fastest times this year.
Can I run the 5-Miler course at the brewery?
No. Please DO NOT come to the Harpoon Brewery on Sunday, May 23 to run your 5 miles. Unfortunately, for the second year in a row, we need to take this race virtual. We know that this year, like last year, is different than most, but in light of the need to practice social distancing, we do not want people coming to the brewery and running the course that they have in the past. Please help us make this a successful virtual run by choosing your own 5-mile course safely distanced from others!
Can I run with a stroller?
As long as you feel safe running with a stroller or a jogging stroller, please feel free to do so!
Can I run with my dog?
Sure! If your pup enjoys a nice long run as much as you do, feel free to bring your 4-legged friend along! Don't forget, we also have our Harpoon Dogtoberfest on October 3, 2021!
Do I have to be over 21 years old to participate in the race?
No, this year's event is open to people of all ages. You must be 21+ to register for the Levels 2 and 3 since those packages include beer. If you are under 21 years old, please feel free to sign up for Level 1, where all ages are welcome. However, if you are under the age of 18, we do need your parent to sign a waiver.
Is there a rain date?
No, there is no rain date. The 20th Annual Harpoon 5-Miler is RAIN OR SHINE. ALS doesn't hold off for the weather and neither will we!
I am not from Massachusetts, can I still participate?
This year's event is a virtual running event, so there are no geographical boundaries to participation. We encourage everyone, runners and non-runners, from around the world to join us to raise much needed funds for those affected by ALS. In fact, for our 2020 Virtual Harpoon 5-Miler, we had participants join us from 42 states and 9 countries!
What happened to 6-pack teams?
The point of this virtual run/walk is to encourage social distancing during COVID-19. We do not want you to be in a group or with anyone that you have not been self-isolating with while you complete your 5 miles. Please help us in our efforts to be sure we take every precaution necessary to have a responsible and successful virtual race.
What if I can’t run on race day? Can I get a refund or transfer my registration to someone else?
Registrations are non-refundable and non-transferable. Please know that your race fee is going to an amazing cause. Since the race is virtual, you can run when you are able to, and post photos on Sunday May 23 along with other participants.
What happened to volunteer sign-ups?
Due to this being a virtual race, we do not need volunteers. This is the year that you can participate and run or walk in the Harpoon 5-Miler yourself!
Is there a finisher medal this year?
No. Instead of a race medal, we are providing all participants in the 'Ship to you' and 'Pick up' levels a commemorative MiiR stainless steel cup for the 20th Harpoon 5-Miler.
